The forgotten benefits of glutamine

E-mail Print PDF

Glutamine is considered a nonessential amino acid (it needn’t be consumed in a diet because the body does not require it for the synthesis of protein). However, many bodybuilders might argue that it is an essential supplement, particularly during times of stress, such as intense training or low-carb dieting.

Supplementing with glutamine helps ensure that the protein you’re eating goes to support muscle growth and prevents it from being stripped from muscles for fuel. Not only does glutamine appear to enhance immune function, support the gastrointestinal system, reduce fatigue and prevent muscle breakdown, but it can also decrease the craving for sugar and other carbohydrates, according to recent research. Take 3-5g two to four times a day on an empty stomach.

Ed. Note: To get glutamine in your diet, you can use a high-quality whey protein, such as Promax by Maximuscle or a glutamine-only product, allowing you to add or mix it to your other drinks. If you're someone who only wants to use the best and most effective products on the market, Glutamine Alpha-Keto-Glutarate (AKG) is a new state-of-the-art glutamine compound which is said to be extremely well tolerated by the body, with a vastly superior uptake and retention profile to plain L-Glutamine.

Bonding AKG to Glutamine aids in delivering more to the bloodstream because it ‘cloaks it’ from detection by the gut. AKG also acts as a direct precursor to the synthesis of glutamine in the body. Glutamax AKG from Maximuscle contains a blend of glutamine and the purest glutamine AKG, together with a patent-pending bicarbonate blend to enhance uptake and absorption.
